This is a unique, rare and exclusive opportunity to visit and tour Montserrat, and to witness an active volcano from a safe distance. Whilst the volcanic Exclusion Zone covers the entire south-eastern half of the island, as well as extending four kilometres off-shore along the eastern coast to what is known as the Maritime Exclusion Zone, there are various vantage points from where it is possible to view the volcano and the destruction it has wrought on the island. Visitors can learn about its geological origins and history as well as view the volcano from safe locations around the island.
You will met at the ship by your tour guide and driven to VC Bird International airport where you will board your awaiting private aircraft. Your flight will head south-east out of the airport for the 15 minutes journey across the Caribbean Sea to the awaiting island of Montserrat.
Upon arrival in Montserrat you will be transferred to your awaiting air conditioned taxi to be taken for a guided sightseeing tour of Montserrat to include Jack Boy Hill In the north east of the island is a viewing facility at Jack Boy Hill, which also provides an excellent vantage point for volcano viewing. This facility overlooks the destroyed W.H. Bramble Airport, the old estate house, the site of destroyed eastern villages, now covered by volcanic pyroclastic flows and of course the volcano. The facility includes a viewing platform, picnic areas, a viewing telescope, a mini trail and landscaped grounds.
Montserrat Volcano Observatory The Soufrière Hills Volcano is constantly monitored by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) in Flemmings. As well as monitoring the volcanic activity, the MVO provides information on the volcano to the general public. In the MVO Interpretation Centre there are poster displays and a 20 minutes video presentation explaining the techniques used in monitoring seismic (earthquake) activity, gas emissions, ground deformation and environmental impacts; and dramatic video shows including a synopsis of the activity and examples of the recent events on the volcano, along with touch screen kiosks and volcanic artefacts on display.
A welcome lunch of grilled chicken or fish with seasonal vegetables and a complimentary drink will be served at one of Montserrat’s best restaurants. There will be stops at the Montserrat Cultural Centre and the National Trust. Your air conditioned transportation will then be waiting to take guests to the Montserrat airport for the return 15 minutes flight back to the awaiting ship in Antigua.
It is essential you bring your passport as you will need to clear both Antigua and Montserrat immigration and we recommend you bring a camera, binoculars, adequate sun protection and comfortable walking shoes.
